KARIM SULAYMAN NOMINATED FOR GRAMMY AWARD FOR SONGS OF ORPHEUS

Tenor Karim Sulayman has received a Grammy Nomination in the category Best Classical Solo Vocal Album, for his solo debut recording Songs of Orpheus (AVIE Records AV2383). The album of Italian baroque arias by Claudio Monteverdi, Giulio Caccini, Sigismondo D'India, Stefano Landi and others, was recorded with Jeannette Sorrell conducting the Cleveland-based period-instrument orchestra Apollo's Fire, and produced by Erica Brenner.

I Love You To Hell and Back is the Lebanese-American tenor’s neat encapsulation of the Orpheus myth which infuses his solo recording debut. Orpheus, the greatest singer of all time, famously followed his deceased beloved Eurydice to the gates of Hades in an attempt to bring her back to life. He was thwarted by the gods who forbade him to gaze at her during their journey back to earth. He could not resist, and the tale has been told in numerous musical interpretations including those of Monteverdi and his 17th-century compatriots who are represented on this imaginative album.

Released in April 2018, Songs of Orpheus debuted at Number 5 on Billboard's Traditional Classical Chart. "Orpheus brought to blazing life," was the verdict of Early Music America Magazine, and BBC Music Magazine praised Karim's "lucid, velvety tenor and pop-star charisma."

Two other AVIE releases are credited in nominations for Classical Producer of the Year: the Santa Fe Desert Chorale's first commercial recording, The Road Home, which was produced by nominee Elizabeth Ostrow; and violinist Anne Akiko Meyers' Mirror in Mirror featuring original works and new arrangements by Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt, Jakub Ciupinski, John Corigliano and Maurice Ravel, which was produced by David Frost.
