TENET Vocal Artists and the Sebastians, two of New York City’s most esteemed early music ensembles, re-unite for performances of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, on Thursday, March 28 and Friday, March 29, 2019, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Chelsea. Like their previous collaborations, the scaled-down interpretations will be performed without a conductor.

TENET Vocal Artists and their Artistic Director Jolle Greenleaf are acclaimed for peerless vocal artistry, astute programming and a collaborative spirit. The instrumentalists of the Sebastians are hailed for connecting to audiences through dynamic and vital performances. Together, the ensembles’ joint performances of choral masterworks have attracted attention for their combination of intimacy and exhilaration.

TENET Vocal Artists and the Sebastians collaborated in April 2017, for a performance of J. S. Bach’s St. John Passion that was singled out by The New York Times as “riveting … compelling … stellar.” This past December the ensembles came together for Messiah and once again drew praise from The New York Times for the conductorless group’s “laserlike focus,” “soul-baring sincerity” and, in a chock-full Messiah season, “Best Orchestra.”

The Lenten-time performances of St. Matthew Passion will be directed from the chamber organ by the Sebastians’ music director Jeffrey Grossman. TENET Vocal Artists’ streamlined forces – just 14 singers – highlight the artistry of each individual performer involved.

St. Matthew Passion is the final performance in TENET Vocal Artists’ 10th anniversary season. The Sebastians’ next concert continues the violin-centric theme of their 2018-19 season with The Art of the Violin, featuring solos, duos and concerti grossi of the Baroque era, on May 7, 2019.
