HORSZOWSKI TRIO DEBUTS AT WIGMORE HALL, RELEASES FIRST ALBUM FOR AVIE RECORDS

The Horszowski Trio, hailed by Gramophone as “a highly accomplished group”, makes its debut at the Wigmore Hall on Sunday, 31 March 2019 in a morning coffee concert that pairs works by Robert Schumann and Dmitri Shostakovich.

The Trio takes its name from the late pianist Mieczslaw Horszowski. The group’s pianist, Rieko Aizawa, was his last student at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Grammy-nominated violinist Jesse Mills and cellist Raman Ramakrishnan met as children at the Kinhaven Music School in Vermont, USA, and later became acquainted with Rieko in New York City. The threesome describes their first musical collaboration as an immediate bond characterised by an exhilarating sense of expressive freedom.

The Horszowski Trio opens its Wigmore debut with Schumann’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 63, foreshadowing the group’s first release for AVIE Records of the complete Schumann Piano Trios, a two-album set due out on 5 April 2019. Following the Schumann – a work by turns joyful and melancholy – is the starkly different sound-world of Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 67, a monument of 20th-century chamber music shaped by war and political upheaval. The contrast would have pleased the ensemble’s namesake, who relished a wide range of repertoire spanning the traditional to the contemporary.

The Horszowski Trio precedes its Wigmore debut with its first appearance at the Moritzburg Festival in Dresden, Germany, on Friday, 29 March 2019, performing the Schumann and Shostakovich Trios alongside Elliott Carter’s Epigrams for piano trio, the eminent American composer’s last completed work prior to his passing in 2012.
