NEW YORK BAROQUE INCORPORATED REUNITES WITH SAINT THOMAS CHOIR FOR HANDEL’S MESSIAH

Performances of George Frideric Handel’s Messiah at Saint Thomas Church are a New York City holiday highlight, and New York Baroque Incorporated’s (NYBI) collaborations with the venerable institution’s Choir of Men and Boys have become part of the annual tradition. Under the baton of Saint Thomas’ Music Director Daniel Hyde, this year’s performances take place on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, and Thursday, December 6, 2018.

NYBI’s first Messiah with the Saint Thomas forces, in 2017, was a resounding success, resulting in the period-instrument ensemble’s return this year for what is “the benchmark for the city’s annual cavalcade of Handel’s beloved ‘entertainment’ on sacred themes” (The New Yorker). Earning high praise as a leading Big Apple-based early music ensemble, NYBI is “studded with stars in the making” according to The New York Times. This year’s Messiah soloists are soprano Elizabeth Weisberg, mezzo-soprano Meg Bragle, tenor Thomas Cooley and baritone Alexander Dobson.

NYBI’s Artistic Director Wen Yang remarks, “Each December, Handel’s Messiah is the main course of a New Yorker’s musical banquet. For NYBI, there is nothing better than performing it at Saint Thomas Church and having the angelic sound of the choir soar over us. I can’t wait to return and collaborate with Dan again in this NYC holiday ritual!”

New York Baroque Incorporated continues its partnership with Saint Thomas Church with two spring performances: a Lenten-time performance of J. S. Bach’s St. John Passion on Thursday, April 11, 2019; and an instrumental program of works by Tomaso Albinoni, J.S. Bach, Handel and Vivaldi on Thursday, May 9, 2019, featuring violinist Olivier Brault, Saint Thomas’ organist Benjamin Sheen and Music Director Daniel Hyde as harpsichord soloist.
