NEW YORK BAROQUE INCORPORATED OPENS 2018-19 SEASON WITH #BACH

New York Baroque Incorporated (NYBI), opens its 2018-19 season with #Bach, a program that features music by Johann Sebastian Bach and two of his composer-sons, Johann Christian and Carl Philipp Emmanuel. The concert, on September 14, 2018, finds the cutting edge early music ensemble returning to Trinity Wall Street's St. Paul's Chapel and collaborating with the resident Choir of Trinity Wall Street.

Johann Sebastian Bach was unquestionably one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era. Among his vast output are hundreds of cantatas, both sacred and secular. In the secular category, Schleicht, spielende Wellen (Glide, O sparkling waves and murmur softly), BWV 206, was composed in 1736 during his tenure as "Thomaskantor" of the city of Leipzig to celebrate the birthday of the Elector Frederick Augustus. The 11-movement work closes the concert with an expanded New York Baroque Incorporated and the Choir of Trinity Wall Street conducted by Julian Wachner.

The first half of #Bach includes works by J. S. Bach's two most notable composer-sons, Carl Philipp Emmanuel and Johann Christian. Born in 1714, C. P. E Bach was J. S. Bach's eldest surviving son. His compositional style was considered avant-garde and his music harmonically adventuresome, as can be heard in his Orchestra-Symphony No. 1 in D, Wq. 183/1 which opens the program. Though 21 years his senior, C. P. E. Bach was close to his youngest half-brother, J. C. Bach who was born in 1735. C. P. E. represented a bridge between the uber-Baroque style of his father and the younger J. C. who began composing on the cusp of the Classical era. His Sinfonia concertante for two violins and cello in E-flat, W C42 was one of at least 15 he penned in the genre that was effectively the successor to the Baroque concerto grosso. Rarely performed today, NYBI has created their own performing edition of the work from the original score. The ensemble will perform the works by C. P. E. and J. C. Bach without a conductor.

Solidifying its association with Trinity Wall Street, New York Baroque Incorporated returns in the spring of 2019, curating a series of four concerts under the banner "Alchemy," with programs based on the classical elements earth, water, air and fire.
