July 4, 2014 – Violinist Augustin Hadelich has been engaged as a last-minute replacement to perform with The Cleveland Orchestra, Hans Graf conducting, on Saturday, July 5, at the orchestra’s summer home, the Blossom Music Festival. He will perform the Sibelius Concerto on the Festival’s 2014 opening concert.

Earlier this year Augustin released a recording of the Sibelius Concerto (AVIE Records), with Hannu Lintu conducting the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, winning widespread acclaim for his playing of “tremendous energy” (Gramophone), resulting in “one of the most convincing and involving versions” of the work, according to BBC Music Magazine.

When Augustin made his debut with the Cleveland Orchestra at the Blossom Music Festival in 2009, performing Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole under the baton of Giancarlo Guerrero, he “easily earned a return invitation with a smashing Cleveland debut,” according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “A consummate showman, Hadelich pranced over considerable technical obstacles with fluent ease, then dashed off a Paganini Caprice as an encore. But behind Hadelich's talent was a molten intensity, a determination to explore the music's passionate, earthy sides with gritty articulation and tender lyricism.”

Augustin’s return to the Cleveland Orchestra, with Guerrero conducting once again, came in March 2011, when he performed the Mendelssohn Concerto during the orchestra’s annual residency in Miami.

Among Augustin’s numerous awards are the Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center (having been nominated by the New York Philharmonic and Music Director Alan Gilbert), a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, an Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the Gold Medal at the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.

Born in Italy to German parents, Augustin Hadelich holds an artist diploma from The Juilliard School, where he was a student of Joel Smirnoff. He plays on the 1723 “Ex-Kiesewetter” Stradivari violin, on loan from Clement and Karen Arrison through the generous efforts of the Stradivari Society.
