Tempesta di Mare, the Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra, Announces 2014-15 Season
Tempesta di Mare
Tempesta di Mare
Andy Kahl

Tempesta di Mare, the Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra, will celebrate its thirteenth season in 2014-15, with five new orchestral and chamber programs in Philadelphia's Center City and Chestnut Hill, plus a special collaborative performance of Handel's Messiah with The Brandywine Singers at Christmas time. Tempesta di Mare will present the third season of its Artist Recital Series, and release its 9th recording for the Chandos label, which is devoted to French baroque orchestral music for the theater.

Throughout the season, the musicians of Tempesta di Mare - led by Co-Directors Gwyn Roberts (recorder and flute) and
Richard Stone (lute), and concertmaster Emlyn Ngai - will be joined by an outstanding roster of vocal soloists, including sopranos Julianne Baird, Laura Heimes and Rosa Lamoreaux; countertenor Drew Minter, tenor Aaron Sheehan, and baritone David Newman.

ORCHESTRA AND CHAMBER MUSIC PROGRAMS
The 2014-2015 orchestra and chamber season begins on October 25 & 26 with Tempesta sings Bach & Praetorius. The program features two Bach cantatas, Durchlaucht'gster Leopold! (BWV 173a) and Komm, du süße Todesstunde (BWV 161), vocal concertos from Praetorius' Polyhymnia collection, and the modern-day premiere of Johann Rosenmüller's wedding cantata, Es muß dir, wertes Paar. The Tempesta di Mare Chamber Players will be joined by a noteworthy line-up of soloists - soprano Laura Heimes, countertenor Drew Minter, tenor Aaron Sheehan and bass David Newman - all of them familiar to and favorites of Philadelphia audiences as well as leaders in their field. The program will be presented both at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill and at the American Philosophical Society in Center City.

On December 5 & 6 the Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra performs Tempesta plays 2 Bachs & Telemann. Johann Sebastian Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann - father, son and godfather, respectively - shared in lifelong personal and musical exchanges. This program showcases the musical relationships as reflected in the father's high baroque traditionalism, the son's early classical modernity and the godfather's embrace of it all. Works include J. S. Bach's Triple Concerto in A minor, BWV 1044, C. P. E. Bach's Symphony in C, Wq 174, Telemann's Flute Concerto in G, TWV 51:G2, and his Divertimento for Strings in B-flat, TWV 50:23. Performances take place both in Center City and Chestnut Hill.

On March 7, the Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra will return to the Kimmel Center for Tempesta plays Purcell & Charpentier, part of Tempesta di Mare's two-season exploration of rarely-performed French orchestral music written for the theater. The program will showcase music written for the first runs of spoken-word comedies from England, France and Spain, featuring orchestral suites from Molière's Le Malade imaginaire (The Hypochondriac) by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Congreve's The Double Dealer by Henry Purcell, and the first new-world performance of Juan Francisco de Navas' songs for Llamosas' zarzuela, Destinos vencen finezas (Fate Trumps Your Vows), sung by Maren Montalbano.

Acclaimed soprano Rosa Lamoreaux will join the Tempesta di Mare Chamber Players on April 25 & 26 for Tempesta sings Bernier & Bourgeois. The program, dedicated to the French chamber cantata, spotlights such rarely performed gems as Thomas-Louis Bourgeois' operatic Phèdre et Hippolyte and Nicolas Bernier's encomium to morning brew, Le Café, plus instrumental music by Jean-Féry Rebel and Jacques Morel. Performances will take place at Arch Street Meeting House (East Room) and The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill.

The season concludes on June 6 with a Kimmel Center performance of Tempesta plays Rameau & Leclair, featuring two of the ensemble's critically-noted rediscoveries. The works on the program, Rameau's ballet Les Fêtes de Polymnie and the orchestral suite to Leclair's tragic opera Scylla et Glaucus, bring Tempesta di Mare's two-season focus on French baroque theater music full circle and to a fitting close.

HANDEL'S MESSIAH
Tempesta di Mare collaborates with The Brandywine Singers and soloists Julianne Baird, Emily Bullock, Stephen Ng and Randall Scarlata for two performances of Handel's Messiah on December 20 at St. Paul's Church in Chestnut Hill, and on December 21 at the Church of the Holy Trinity in West Chester. Keeping with tradition, the musicians will perform Handel's original version of the score as it was premiered in Dublin in 1742. More information and tickets for this performance can be found at www.thebrandywinesingers.org.

ARTIST RECITAL SERIES
2014-2015 marks the third season of Tempesta di Mare's celebrated Artist Recital Series. Curated and narrated by Tempesta's musicians, this season's three programs will once again be presented in an informal atmosphere with inspiring surroundings. On September 20 and 28, Julianne Baird and Richard Stone will present an evening of songs from Shakespeare plays with Elizabethan music by Thomas Morley, Robert Johnson and more. On February 7 and 8, Tempesta's principal cellist Lisa Terry devotes an evening to the music of Marin Marais, performing on viola da gamba and accompanied by Richard Stone on theorbo. Concluding the series, on March 14 and 15, Tempesta di Mare's principal second violinist Karina Schmitz and guitarist Simon Martyn-Ellis explore 19th-century European salon music, performing works by Niccolo
Paganini, Ferdinando Carulli, Mauro Guiliani and Bohemian composer Wenzel Thomas Matiegka.

COMÉDIE & TRAGÉDIE
The 2014-2015 season marks the conclusion of Tempesta di Mare's project Comédie & Tragédie: French baroque orchestral music for the theater, a two-season curatorial focus on French baroque music comprising concerts, recordings, workshops and broadcasts. This season's offerings include the music from Rameau's ballet Les Fêtes de Polymnie, Leclair's tragic opera Scylla et Glaucus, and incidental music by Charpentier to Molière's comic play Le Malade Imaginaire, as well as chamber cantatas by Bernier and Bourgeois. The first of two project-related recordings, Comédie & Tragédie, vol. 1, will be released on Chandos Records in March 2015, with volume two scheduled for release in 2016.

Since its inception, Tempesta di Mare has distinguished itself by programming high-quality, lesser-known works and composers alongside more familiar music, providing a sense of context and discovery for audiences. Comédie & Tragédie expands upon this pattern of programmatic imagination with a broad exploration of this important repertoire that is rarely performed in the United States.

Comédie & Tragédie is supported and made possible in part by a grant through The Pew Center for Arts and Heritage.

Additional support for the Nancy and Dick Eales Series at the Kimmel Center is provided by The Presser Foundation and Cancer Treatment Centers for America.

TEMPESTA DI MARE PHILADELPHIA BAROQUE ORCHESTRA & CHAMBER PLAYERS
Fanfare magazine has hailed Tempesta di Mare for its "abundant energy, immaculate ensemble, impeccable intonation, and an undeniable sense of purpose." Led by directors Gwyn Roberts and Richard Stone with concertmaster Emlyn Ngai, Tempesta performs baroque music on baroque instruments with a repertoire that ranges from staged opera to chamber music. The group performs all orchestral repertoire without a conductor, as was the practice when this music was new. Tempesta's Philadelphia Concert Series, noted by the Philadelphia Inquirer for its "off-the-grid chic factor," emphasizes creating a sense of discovery for artists and audiences alike. Launched in 2002, the series has included 31 modern world premieres of lost or forgotten baroque masterpieces, leading the Inquirer to describe Tempesta as "an old-music group that acts like a new-music group, by pushing the cutting edge back rather than forward." Its supporters include the Pew Charitable Trusts, the William Penn Foundation, the Presser Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

In a marketplace dominated by European ensembles, Tempesta is the only American baroque music group to record for the prestigious British-based Chandos label. Releases include Weiss: Lute Concerti (2004), Handel: Flaming Rose (2007), Scarlatti: Cantatas and Chamber Music (2010), Fasch: Orchestral Music, vol.1 (2008), vol.2 (2011) and vol.3 (2012), Mancini: Solos for a Flute (2014), and Bach Trio Sonatas (2014). Live performances have been broadcast nationally on SymphonyCast, Performance Today, Sunday Baroque and Harmonia. Tempesta di Mare's concert recordings are distributed worldwide via the European Broadcasting Union, the world's foremost alliance of public service media organizations, with members in 56 countries in Europe and beyond.

Tempesta di Mare has toured from Oregon to Prague. Notable recent appearances have included the International Handel Festival in Göttingen, Germany; the group's New York debut at the Frick Collection; the orchestra's first European tour to the International Fasch Festival in Zerbst and a sold-out appearance on the Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series in Hartford, Connecticut.
