Augustin Hadelich will make two important London debuts in October – his recital debut at the Wigmore Hall on 4 October, and his orchestral debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (BBCSO) on 11 October. At the Wigmore, partnered by pianist Charles Owen, he’ll perform a diverse programme of works by Beethoven, Sarasate, Schnittke, Stravinsky and Ysaÿe. With the BBCSO, conducted by Sakari Oramo at the Barbican, he’ll perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4.

For his eagerly awaited Wigmore Hall debut, Augustin has conceived a programme that is distinguished by its contrasts and references. He opens with Beethoven’s classically proportioned Violin Sonata No. 8 in G, followed by Schnittke’s Shostakovich-inspired Violin Sonata No. 1. Augustin’s technical wizardry will be on full display in Ysaÿe’s fiendishly difficult solo Violin Sontata in D minor (dedicated to Georges Enescu), which then gives way to Stravinsky’s Divertimento transcribed by the composer from his ballet The Fairy Kiss, and the programme’s closer, Sarasate’s popular Carmen Fantasy.

For his debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, with the orchestra’s Chief Conductor Sakari Oramo on the podium, Augustin will take the stage with Mozart’s Fourth Violin Concerto, a work he has performed to great acclaim with numerous international orchestras and conductors, including recently the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Juanjo Mena at Tanglewood, the São Paulo Symphony and Marin Alsop, and the Toronto Symphony and Peter Oundjian, after which Augustin “had the audience on its feet for a long time after his assured yet touchingly subtle reading of Mozart’s Fourth” (The Globe and Mail). Augustin writes his own cadenzas for Mozart’s violin concertos, which have been praised for their “striking originality” by The Strad.

Augustin’s BBCSO debut joins an impressive string of orchestral debuts in recent seasons including the BBC Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony and Royal Scottish National Orchestras, as well as the Boston Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony and Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. With his debut at the Wigmore Hall, he adds to his long list of notable recital appearances, including Carnegie Hall in New York, The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Kioi Hall in Tokyo, The Louvre in Paris and the Sage Gateshead.

Among Augustin’s numerous awards are a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, the Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center (having been nominated by the New York Philharmonic and Music Director Alan Gilbert), an Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the Gold Medal at the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.

Augustin has released four critically acclaimed recordings on AVIE Records – Flying Solo, Echoes of Paris, which garnered an Editor’s Choice from Gramophone magazine, Histoire du Tango, and, most recently the concertos of Jean Sibelius and Thomas Adès, with Hannu Lintu conducting the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, which was nominated for a Gramophone Award. For Naxos, he has recorded Telemann’s complete Fantasies for solo violin, and Haydn’s complete violin concerti with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra.

Born in Italy to German parents, Augustin Hadelich holds an artist diploma from The Juilliard School, where he was a student of Joel Smirnoff. He plays on the 1723 “Ex-Kiesewetter” Stradivari violin, on loan from Clement and Karen Arrison through the generous efforts of the Stradivari Society.
