Augustin Hadelich will appear at Carnegie Hall for the second time in 2014 to perform with the New York String Orchestra under the direction of Jaime Laredo. On December 28 at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, Augustin will perform Barber’s Violin Concerto, a work that has a special place in his repertoire.

Born in Italy to German parents, Augustin moved to New York at the age of 20 to study at The Juilliard School. It was only after arriving in New York that he became familiar with the Barber Concerto, a work heard less often in Europe. He fell in love with the work and quickly added it to his repertoire. “Barber’s writing is so deeply felt, unselfconsciously beautiful and genuinely moving,” says Augustin. It was the concerto with which he made his debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood in 2012, with Bramwell Tovey conducting. Most recently he performed the work with the San Diego Symphony and Jahja Ling on tour in China, proving himself an “elegant, insightful violinist … with each performance [going] a little deeper, always challenging himself and finding new facets in the music” (San-Diego Union-Tribune).

Augustin, who became a U.S. citizen this year, has also performed the distinctly American Barber Concerto in Europe, recently performing the work on tour in Stuttgart and Düsseldorf with the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra and Sir Neville Marriner.

Augustin’s performance with the New York String Orchestra continues to bolster his already noteworthy presence in the Big Apple. It will mark his second appearance this year at Carnegie – and fifth overall since his debut there in 2008 – following his premiere of David Lang’s mystery sonatas at Zankel Hall in April 2014. “I cannot imagine a better performance than the one Mr. Hadelich gave,” enthused The New York Times’ Anthony Tommasini. “His playing combined impressive technical command with plush, rich-textured sound. And with magisterial poise and serene control, Mr. Hadelich became a riveting storyteller.” Other recent New York appearances include his second recital appearance at the Frick Collection and his subscription debut with the New York Philharmonic, both in 2013. He will return to the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall in May 2015.

Augustin has performed with the New York String Orchestra once before, in December 2008, playing Mozart’s Concerto No. 5 (“Turkish”). Every year since 1969, the New York String Orchestra Seminar, founded by Alexander Schneider, brings together talented young instrumentalists aged 16 – 23, to rehearse and perform two orchestral programs at Carnegie Hall. Of his first performance with the Orchestra, Augustin recalls, “I was impressed and inspired not only by the high level of playing, but also the enthusiasm and joy the young musicians brought to making music. It was one of the best string sections I’ve ever heard, and was an unforgettable experience.”

Among Augustin’s numerous awards are the Gold Medal at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis (2006), an Avery Fisher Career Grant (2009), a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship (2010), and the Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center (2012), having been nominated by the New York Philharmonic and Music Director Alan Gilbert. This year he was short-listed for a Gramophone Award for his most recent release, pairing the Violin Concertos of Thomas Adès and Sibelius (AVIE Records), which was also chosen as one the 50 Favorite Albums of 2014 by NPR, whose Tom Huizenga found Augustin’s “shimmering tone and laser-like intonation on magnificent display ... a thrilling tightrope act danced by a young master.” This past November, Augustin was nominated for the newly-established Warner Music Prize.

Augustin Hadelich holds an artist diploma from The Juilliard School, where he was a student of Joel Smirnoff. He plays on the 1723 “Ex-Kiesewetter” Stradivari violin, on loan from Clement and Karen Arrison through the Stradivari Society of Chicago.
