[elements], the new release by Ludovico Einaudi, has scaled new heights for the best-selling Italian composer-pianist. In the U.S., [elements] has debuted on Billboard’s Classical Crossover chart at Number 2, Einaudi’s best-ever opening week in the country. In the UK, Einaudi is the first classical composer to reach the Top 15 of the pop chart in over 20 years. [elements] debuted on the official UK album chart at Number 12, higher than pop star Taylor Swift. It is the highest charting modern classical album since Henryk Górecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs reached Number 6 in 1992.

Einaudi reacted, “It is a great thrill for me to have an album in the Top 15 of the UK pop charts,” continuing, “The best gift that you can have is to know that listeners embrace what you’re doing as you try to embrace them with your music. It’s a fantastic experience to live through and it’s very exciting.”

The composer, whose [elements] also debuted at Number 1 on the UK’s classical charts, studied with the Italian composer Luciano Berio and is the grandson of the former president of Italy, Luigi Einaudi. He has written numerous film scores and his music has been synchronized extensively in television programs. It has also attracted a number of electronic musicians and DJs – including electronic dance musician Moby and Scottish post-rock band Mogwai – who have sampled his music in their own work. Also in the UK, Einaudi’s music recently had the distinction of occupying all top ten positions of iTunes’ classical singles chart.

While the sound world of [elements] is unmistakably Einaudi, the music explores new territory and is inspired by themes as diverse as mythology, science, the written word, visual art and natural landscapes. The album’s 12 tracks essentially comprise a 12-part suite performed by an ensemble of piano, strings, percussion, guitar and electronic instruments, effortlessly interweaving acoustic and electronic sounds.
