AUGUSTIN HADELICH COVERS MUCH GROUND IN THE UK DURING WINTER AND SPRING 2016

Throughout the winter and spring of 2016, violinist Augustin Hadelich will spend his most concentrated period of time to date in the UK, returning to orchestras and venues where he has made triumphant debuts in recent seasons, all of which resulted in immediate re-engagement. His acclaimed debut with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in 2013 led to his being selected this season’s Artist-in-Residence. He will make return appearances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) and BBC Philharmonic, and perform his second recital at Wigmore Hall.

As the Bournemouth Symphony’s 2015-16 Artist-in-Residence, Augustin will make multiple appearances with the orchestra over the coming months, first in February when he performs Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto under the baton of Chief Conductor Kirill Karabits. Performances are on 17 February at the Lighthouse in Poole, 18 February in the Great Hall in Exeter, and 19 February in Cheltenham’s Town Hall. Augustin returns to the Lighthouse on 16 March for a Celebrity Recital with last season’s BSO Artist-in-Residence, pianist Sunwook Kim, and members of the orchestra’s string sections for a programme of works by Mozart, Ysaÿe, Janáček, and Mendelssohn. Augustin’s BSO residency culminates with a performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto, with Thomas Dausgaard conducting the BSO in performances on 27 April at the Lighthouse, and on 28 April at the Guildhall in Portsmouth.

Less than a year after his April 2015 debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Augustin returns to the LPO and their home venue the Royal Festival Hall on 24 February, performing the Tchaikovsky Concerto with conductor Vasily Petrenko. The Concerto will be recorded live and paired with Augustin’s performance from last season of Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole, with conductor Omer Meir Wellber, on the LPO’s own label, due for release in early 2017.

Augustin reunites with the BBC Philharmonic to perform Bartók’s Violin Concerto No. 2 – a work featured on his latest recording for AVIE Records – with conductor Juanjo Mena. Performances take place on 26 February at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham, 27 February at Leeds Town Hall, and 28 February at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.

Augustin returns to the UK in May for his second appearance at Wigmore Hall. Collaborating with pianist Charles Owen, the 21 May programme will include works by Janáček, David Lang, Andre Previn, and Schumann.

Augustin’s other previous UK appearances include his 2015 live debut with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, following his Gramophone Award-nominated recording with the orchestra of the concertos by Thomas Adès and Sibelius (AVIE Records); his 2014 debuts with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and a BBC Lunchtime Concert at the Sage Gateshead in 2010.

Augustin was recently named the first recipient of the Warner Music Prize, a new, $100,000 (USD) classical music award established by the Warner Music Group that is to be given annually to a musician under the age of 35 who demonstrates exceptional talent and promise. Among his other awards are a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship (2010), the Gold Medal at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis (2006), an Avery Fisher Career Grant (2009), and, in 2012, the Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center, having been nominated by the New York Philharmonic and Music Director Alan Gilbert.

Among Augustin’s rapidly growing discography is the recently released violin concerto by Henri Dutilleux, “L’arbre des songes” (The Tree of Dreams), on Seattle Symphony Media, a nominee for this year’s Grammy® Awards.

Born in Italy to German parents, Augustin Hadelich holds an artist diploma from The Juilliard School, where he was a student of Joel Smirnoff. He plays on the 1723 “Ex-Kiesewetter” Stradivari violin, on loan from Clement and Karen Arrison through the generous efforts of the Stradivari Society.
