TENET CELEBRATES PIONEERING FEMALE MUSICIANS OF 17TH CENTURY ITALY WITH RELEASE OF “THE SECRET LOVER”
The Secret Lover

AVIE Records
The preëminent New York-based early music ensemble TENET will release its latest recording, The Secret Lover, on AVIE Records on March 4. The album pays tribute to the Concerto delle donne, a pioneering trio of female vocalists who rose to fame during the late Italian Renaissance. Admired for their artistry, the virtuosas inspired composers of both sexes throughout the country, including Francesca Caccini, Claudio Monteverdi, Luigi Rossi, Barbara Strozzi and others whose works appear on The Secret Lover. The Secret Lover features three of TENET’s leading ladies, sopranos Jolle Greenleaf and Molly Quinn, and mezzo-soprano Virginia Warnken Kelsey, who honor the spirit of the Concerto delle donne in florid, close-harmony 17th-century solos, duets and trios. They are joined by some of the foremost instrumentalists of the New York early music scene – Hank Heijink, Daniel Swenberg and Charles Weaver on theorbo, lute and baroque guitar; Josh Lee on viola da gamba; and Jeffrey Grossman on harpsichord. For Jolle Greenleaf, TENET’s Artistic Director, “This project is about bringing to light beautiful works by female composers that too often remain in the shadows. We are thrilled to be able to record this rarely sung repertoire that was written both by and for women during a time of relative repression.” The Secret Lover, the translation of ground-breaking composer Barbara Strozzi’s cantata L’Amante segreto, weaves a story thread to create a musical portrait of the Concerto delle donne and their complex lives within a male-dominated culture. These professional singers revolutionized the role of women in music during the late Renaissance and flourished, in particular, in the court of Alfonso II, Duke of Ferrara. As a 21st century tribute, TENET has commissioned a new work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, Dolce cantavi, a setting of a 17th century poem, which mingles with music by Caccini, Strozzi, Sigismondo d’India, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Giovanni Kapsberger, Diego Ortiz, and Luigi and Michelangelo Rossi. TENET first presented The Secret Lover as a semi-staged performance in January 2015 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the environs of the Met’s 17th-century Italian galleries which display paintings by Caravaggio and his contemporaries. On the occasion, The New Yorker’s Alex Ross enjoyed the ensemble’s “exuberant, subversive counterpoint” and “rollicking, foot-tapping finale.” Reprising the program in April 2015 at the Upper East Side’s House of the Redeemer, TENET’s “voices, delicate individually, rose to more than the sum of their parts in richness and eloquence when combined” (The New York Times). TENET debuted on AVIE Records with the October 2013 release of UNO + ONE (AV 2302), a recording of canzonette, arie and scherzi by Monteverdi and his contemporary Italian masters that was “a complete success,” according to Gramophone magazine. TENET will celebrate the release of The Secret Lover with a performance and event at New York’s Tenri Cultural Institute on March 4. * * * * * For further information, image or interview requests please contact Melanne Mueller, +1 917 907 2785, melanne@avierecords.com For further information about TENET, visit www.tenet.nyc
