Augustin Hadelich

Augustin Hadelich will return to the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall on November 25, 26 and 27, 2016. With Krzysztof Urbánski on the podium, Hadelich will perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5, known as the “Turkish.”

Hadelich has become a familiar presence to Southern California audiences over the years. These performances mark his fifth appearance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic following three at the Hollywood Bowl – in Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in 2008, the Mendelssohn Concerto in 2010, and the Tchaikovsky Concerto in 2013 – and his debut at Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2014 playing the Beethoven Concerto. In addition he played with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra in 2015, and with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in 2012. Numerous recitals have taken Hadelich to various venues including UCLA’s Clarke Library.

Hadelich’s previous performances of Mozart’s “Turkish” Concerto – the name deriving from the final movement’s “alla Turca” section, a popular Classical-era motif that imitates the sound of a Turkish military band – have received rapturous acclaim. The New York Times noted the “eloquence” of his interpretation in a May 2015 appearance with the New York Philharmonic. With the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in March 2015, he “spun phrases filled with personality” (Baltimore Sun), and “had an astonishing solo turn ... both technically and musically impeccable. As the final sign of his consummate musicianship, Hadelich played his own fascinating cadenzas, daringly laden with double-stops” (The Washington Post).

Highlights of Hadelich’s 2016-17 season include return appearances with the New York Philharmonic and the Danish National Orchestra, as well as the symphony orchestras of Baltimore, Colorado, Dallas, Saint Louis and San Diego, performing repertoire ranging from Brahms, Bruch and Britten to Chausson and Lalo, Dvoƙák and Shostakovich. He makes debuts with the radio orchestras of Cologne and Frankfurt and the Philharmonic Orchestras of Dresden, Hamburg, Helsinki and Munich, and performs recitals in Dallas, Bamberg, Munich, St. Paul, San Francisco and New York City. New releases include a recital recording with frequent collaborator pianist Joyce Yang featuring works by Franck, Kurtág, Previn and Schumann (AVIE Records, November 2016), and Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole paired with Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto on the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s own label (March 2017).

In 2016, Hadelich added to his numerous awards with his first Grammy – Best Classical Instrumental Solo for his recording of Henri Dutilleux’s violin concerto, L’Arbre Des Songes (“The Tree of Dreams”) with Ludovic Morlot and the Seattle Symphony – and the inaugural Warner Music Prize. He is also the recipient of a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship (2010), the Gold Medal at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis (2006), an Avery Fisher Career Grant (2009), and, in 2012, the Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center, having been nominated by the New York Philharmonic and Music Director Alan Gilbert.

The son of German parents, Hadelich was born and raised in Italy. A resident of New York City since 2004 and now an American citizen, Augustin Hadelich holds an artist diploma from The Juilliard School, where he was a student of Joel Smirnoff. He plays on the 1723 “Ex-Kiesewetter” Stradivari violin, on loan from Clement and Karen Arrison through the generous efforts of the Stradivari Society.
