NEW YORK BAROQUE INCORPORATED RETURNS TO TRINITY WALL STREET FOR BACH AT ONE
New York Baroque Incorporated
New York Baroque Incorporated

Beginning on March 6, 2017, New York Baroque Incorporated (NYBI) will return to Trinity Wall Street carrying the torch of the esteemed institution’s Bach at One series. The free, one-hour, lunchtime performances at Saint Paul’s Chapel take place on Mondays at 1:00 pm through May 8, 2017. The programmatic thread binding this year’s Bach at One series is the composer’s Clavierübung III, or "German Organ Mass." With each program taking a theme from the Lutheran liturgy, sections of the Clavierübung, which will be performed by Avi Stein and Trinity Wall Street Music Director Julian Wachner, will be interspersed with instrumental and vocal works by Bach and more than a dozen of his continental contemporaries including Dietrich Buxtehude and Johann Philipp Krieger, both notable and prolific creators of sacred compositions, and the cosmopolitan Georg Philipp Telemann. Collaborating with soloists of The Choir of Trinity Wall Street, New York Baroque Incorporated will also present several of Bach’s popular cantatas and his St. John Passion. This year’s Bach at One series celebrates the arrival of a two manual Noack organ at Saint Paul’s Chapel.

New York Baroque Incorporated first collaborated with Trinity Wall Street and Julian Wachner on January 1, 2016 as part of Trinity’s Twelfth Night Festival, performing works by Bach, Handel, Haydn and Michael Daugherty. The memorable concert proved to be “a hot start to the New Year” (Time Out New York) and can be viewed here.

New York Baroque Incorporated’s Bach at One series traverses a diverse musical terrain. The Bach cantatas to be performed are Es ist das Heil uns kommen her, BWV 9; Ich habe genug, BWV 82; Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich, BWV 150; Komm, du süße Todesstunde, BWV 161; Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust, BWV 170; and Bekennen will ich seinen Namen, BWV 200. At the start of Holy Week, on April 10, 2016, NYBI will combine forces with Julian Wachner and The Choir of Trinity Wall Street for Bach’s St. John Passion, which will feature one instrument playing each of the orchestral parts, and two singers each per the choral parts.

Choral and vocal works by Buxtehude, whose compositional style had a significant influence on Bach, include An filius non est Dei, BuxWV 6; Gott hilf mir, denn das Wasser, BuxWV 34; Ist es recht, BuxWV 54; and Jubilate Domino, BuxWV 64.

Organist and composer Krieger is represented by the first of his 12 sonatas for two violins and continuo; and two of his 2,000 or so cantatas, Herr, auf dich trau ich, and O Jesu, du mein Leben.

From the prolific output of Telemann, whose 250th death anniversary falls this year, NYBI and their collaborators will perform the funeral cantata Du aber, Daniel, gehe hin, the Missa brevis, and the instrumental Quartet in A minor TWV 43:a3 for recorder, oboe, violin and continuo.

Rounding out NYBI’s Bach at One series is music by J. S. Bach’s sons Wilhelm Friedemann and Johann Christian; fellow-Germans Johann David Heinichen, Gottlieb Muffat and Johann Michael Nicolai; Dutchman Johannes Schenck; French composers François Couperin and Marin Marias; and Italians Francesco Maria Veracini and Lorenzo Gaetano Zavateri. For the final program, Julian Wachner provides a modern twist with his arrangement of the Jimmy Page / Robert Plant classic rock song Stairway to Heaven.
