TENET IN MARCH
TENET
TENET

TENET frames the month of March with music by two highly influential baroque composers, including a modern premiere performance and the ensemble’s annual TENEbrae concert for the Lenten season. In between the group returns to Puerto Rico’s Festival Casals with the much-praised program The Secret Lover. All three performances shine a spotlight on the individual vocal talents of New York City’s preëminent early music ensemble and underline the group’s signature spirit of collaboration with like-minded musicians.

On March 2, 2018, TENET teams with baroque string ensemble ACRONYMN for the modern premiere performance of Le Memorie Dolorose by 17th-century Austrian violinist and composer Johann Heinrich Schmelzer. Fusing elements of opera and oratorio, Le Memorie Dolorose tells the story of the Virgin Mary after the death of Christ, as she interacts with Angels, Apostles and others. ACRONYMN is dedicated to the rediscovery of lost gems from the baroque era and has unearthed and transcribed Le Memorie Dolorose for this occasion. TENET’s vocalists will characterize the cast, backed by ACRONYM’s instrumental forces.

TENET’s annual TENEbrae performances at Lenten time have become a highlight of New York City’s concert calendar. This year, on March 24, 2018, TENET’s singers join forces with the Sebastians for Pathway to Light, a spiritual and reflective program of sacred cantatas by the German baroque organist and composer Dieterich Buxtehude, alongside instrumental works by his contemporaries Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, Georg Frideric Handel and Johann Caspar Kerll. The program traverses the darkness and sacrifice of Lent, through Christ’s crucifixion, ending with the joy and light of Easter.

In between, on March 8, 2018, three of TENET’s leading ladies – artistic director and soprano Jolle Greenleaf, soprano Molly Quinn and mezzo-soprano Virginia Warnken Kelsey – headline the ensemble’s return to Puerto Rico’s Festival Casals as they revisit The Secret Lover, their acclaimed program that celebrates music by, for, and about women and pays tribute to the 17th century Concerto delle donne, a trio of extraordinarily gifted professional female singers who were renowned for their performances in the courts of the late Italian Renaissance. In advance of their Puerto Rican tour, TENET is raising funds for P.E.C.E.S. (El Programa de Educación Comunal de Entrega y Servicio), a grassroots nonprofit organization that supports children and families, both socially and musically, and is helping to rebuild in the southeastern region of the island following the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria.
