Augustin Hadelich
Augustin Hadelich

One of the top young violinists today will make his SummerFest debut on Tuesday. Augustin Hadelich comes from German parents living in Italy and studied at Juilliard. He is the gold medal winner of the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, the most prestigious violin competition in North America . He suffered severe burns in a farm accident at age 15 (his parents moved from Germany to start a vineyard in Italy). The only part of his upper body spared was his left hand. He had to endure painful skin grafts and endless rehabilitation. Then he had to relearn to play the violin. His hard work has paid off. He is making the debut rounds among the top orchestras. Cynthia Phelps, principal violist of the New York Philharmonic and a current SummerFest artist, told me that Augustin stepped in to play the Mendelssohn Concerto on two days' notice with the New York Philharmonic with Alan Gilbert conducting. "Amazing and beautiful" were the words Cynthia used to describe Augustin's playing. When I was judging the Indianapolis Competition, the same words popped into my mind when Augustin played.
