Recordings of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos are hardly thin on the ground, but this swaggering version, given by the Cleveland-based baroque orchestra Apollo's Fire, more than holds its own against the competition. The sound is closely miked, and the most is made of the variety of instrumental colour Bach put so exhilaratingly on show. A second disc complements the rich-textured Sixth Concerto with the two Harpischord Concertos BWV 1052 and BWV 1056, both brilliantly played, as is the keyboard part in the Fifth Brandenburg, by Sorrell.
