This performance (not quite live, as it was created from recordings made at rehearsal and in concert) is one of true classical proportions, as the Manchester Camerata's string section is based on five desks of first violins. The main advantage is that, instead of an obfuscating wall of sound, there's a more open landscape, enabling the conductor, Douglas Boyd, to make the complex, boldly coloured wind and brass writing clear and telling. His tempos tend toward the brisk, removing, in the opening movement, a measure of gravitas, but replacing that with other qualities. He makes the most of the big moments and the chorus is tumultuously joyful.
